Eco Friendly Cleaning

For the wellbeing of ourselves, our loved ones and the environment we need to move to eco friendly cleaning products. There are so many things we can do in our own homes which will make a difference in helping our planet. For example, many of the cleaning products you probably already have in your cupboard contain harmful chemicals including things like nitrogen, phosphorous, ammonia and a variety of petrochemicals. Whilst some people are prone to the immediate effects of these ingredients for others the effect on our health can occur even if we don’t experience headaches or rashes when we use them.

Eco Friendly Cleaning

We often dilute our cleaning products in water and use them in the sink, the shower or the bath. Each time we rinse them down the drain. Imagine how this occurs in millions of homes and businesses every day with chemicals polluting our drinking water and oceans.

UCLA’s Sustainability Research Center is one of the leading public research universities in the world. They have established interdisciplinary research initiatives to bring together faculty and researchers from across the university to collaborate on challenges in achieving enhanced ecosystems and human health by 2050. The areas of study are far-reaching and include some which we can all help to change right now such as the harmful effects of cleaning products on our health and environment. You can help by choosing eco friendly cleaning products for your home.

The level of chemicals in our water supplies is quite alarming and whilst this can be due to local factors a lot of this is driven by the chemicals we are using which end up in our drinking water. Most local council water treatments include the use of chlorine to kill bacteria in water but other chemicals found in the water have come from our homes and business. Studies have found the chemicals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, aluminum, nitrates, trihalomethanes and polyaromatic hydrocarbons in drinking water. Dishwashing detergents, for example, contain phosphates which result in algae collecting on the surface of water due to the accumulation of phosphates in the water.
